MATTHEW FRANCIS: POETRY AND FICTION
WHOM is the gigantic computer system that dominates the White House, a system so complex that the only man who can understand it can't explain it. Its complexity is reflected in the structure of WHOM, a group of apparently unrelated stories. A young Englishwoman is caught up in a hijacking, a young Englishman is stranded on a war-torn Mediterranean island, and the White House official in charge of monitoring the President's love-life makes a terrifying discovery, while, in another timeframe altogether, a shipwrecked St Paul faces the biggest challenge of his missionary career. Together, these stories add up to a surreal and comic satire on US foreign policy and religious fundamentalism. My first novel,WHOM, was published by Bloomsbury Publishing in 1989.
